About Micah
Micah Small is a 4th generation musician. He follows in the footsteps of his great-grandfather’s “Small Family Band”, which his grandfather was a part of. His father, Dan, known to many in the midwest as D.J., Small, was not a member of the Small Family Band, but he did grace the stage for years as well. D.J. was the front man for the D.J. & the Gents, D.J. Small & the Squires, D.J. Small & the Storm Creek Band, Horizon and Thrillbilly, to name a few. Micah has also played in several bands over the years, ranging from rock to blues and finally settling on country, his family’s primary musical heritage. His history started back in junior high when he started jamming with life-long friends Jason Haven and Jay Menning. Eventually he met and played with Andy Gibson and formed a band called Cookie Dough Bliss, later Micah, Jason, Jay and Andy played in a blues-rock group called Fourplay. When everyone went their separate ways after high school, they all kept playing music with new adventures. Micah transitioned from drums to guitar and found his voice. Eventually he decided to play lead guitar and has played in bands such as Legalimit, Quickdraw and eventually Thrillbilly with his father, which was a lifelong dream. When Dan passed away suddenly in 2014, Micah kept playing for a while, but really lost the fire. Micah and his father were both inducted into the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015. After the Hall of Fame honor, he decided to start a new power group, called The Union Cattle Band, with Aaron Deutsch and Greg Miller, later they added Darin Zuehlke when Greg’s health forced him into retirement. Finally Jay Menning came onboard and the band was comprised of four individuals that all grew up in the same small town of Britton, SD. When the Union Cattle band decided to part ways, Micah fulfilled the rest of the bookings under the name Micah Small & the Reride Band. Micah retired for about two years. Currently, Micah is working on a new project called “Long Live Country Music” produced by Ron Keel. He is happy to share the stage with Ron Keel and his band, Collin Donley and Rachel Lord. This project also includes Jason Haven on guitar. Aside from Long Live Country Music, Micah is also coming out of retirement with his new project, Micah Small & the Outlaw Band, or Outlaw as many refer to it.
